Our Site Speed Test
it’s been a day of slowness
As a result of heavy traffic and a long uptime record, today one of our servers started to moan. after tinkering for a few hours I figured the only fair way to test the success of our efforts was to use a third party tool to evaluate our site speed against some other popular sites.
- www.mediamodus.com 23.49 KB 2.26 seconds 0.1 seconds
- www.ysh.co.uk 14.75 KB 0.27 seconds 0.02 seconds
- www.mydish.co.uk 40.38 KB 0.96 seconds 0.02 seconds
- www.vonhost.co.uk 13.42 KB 0.82 seconds 0.06 seconds
- www.google.com 6.34 KB 0.07 seconds 0.01 seconds
- www.microsoft.com 1 KB 0.28 seconds 0.28 seconds
- www.yahoo.com 9.27 KB 0.49 seconds 0.05 seconds
Well we didnt do too bad having beat Microsoft and being less than a tenth of a second slower than the rest I think we are doing ok.
What do you think and how do you test your own sites?

A bit of clarification. The two columns of time readings, which one is ttfb and which one is “download duration”?
At basicstate.com we use the same reports that the users get. The email reports show five numbers for each site.
time to resolve dns
time to connect
time to send request
ttfb - time to first byte
ttlb - time to last byte
BTW, accounts are free.

Hi Spenser,
good question, i believe the first time is total, and the second is per Kb.
Thanks for the heads up re basicstate, will have a look at that later today.
Cheers.
